
Storm fend off Ignition, improve to 2-1

HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. - Midfielder Andy Rosenband scored two goals, forward Awadalla Morad posted another game-winner and the Chicago Storm defeated the Detroit Ignition, 8-6, on Saturday afternoon in Xtreme Soccer League action at the Sears Centre Arena. With the victory, the Storm (2-1) are alone in second place in the XSL standings, while Detroit drops to 1-2.
Next up for the Storm is a 1 p.m. match on Dec. 31, against the host Milwaukee Wave (2-0) at the U.S. Cellular Arena. The Storm's next home game is at 1 p.m. Jan. 4, 2009, against the New Jersey Ironmen.
Rosenband's goals on Saturday came during a 6-0 run that spanned the second and early third quarters. His first goal tied the score at 2-2, and he was the recipient of a well-placed outlet pass from goalkeeper Jeff Richey, who was credited with the assist. Chicago defender Fabinho notched his first goal of the season with 2:09 left in the first half. And Rosenband added his second goal at the 2:25 mark of the third quarter for a 6-2 lead.
Detroit responded with goals from Tino Scicluna and Josh Rife. But with less than 5 minutes remaining in regulation, Morad punched home the game-winner past Ignition goalkeeper Danny Waltman. Morad has scored both game-winning goals for the Storm this season, with his first coming against New Jersey during a 4-2 victory in Chicago's XSL opener in Newark, N.J.
In the net, the Storm's Richey made nine saves out of 12 shots. Waltman, who formerly played with the Storm in 2004-2005 and 2005-2006, saved 12 of 16 shots. Richey's victory is the 25th of his indoor soccer career, and he improves to 2-1 on the season. Chicago improves to 4-1 against Detroit at the Sears Centre Arena.
