Chicago Storm News Release
HOFFMAN ESTATES, Il - Chris Cerroni's two-goal effort was not enough for the Chicago Storm as they dropped their 2008-2009 Xtreme Soccer League home opener against the Milwaukee Wave, 12-8, on Saturday at the Sears Centre Arena in Hoffman Estates.
Milwaukee goalkeeper Marcel Feenstra made 18 saves and held the Storm scoreless in the fourth quarter. Chicago outshot Milwaukee, 30-14. The Storm drop to 1-1 in the XSL standings, while Milwaukee takes the early first-place lead with a 2-0 mark.
Next up for the Storm is a 1 p.m. home match against the Detroit Ignition (1-1) on Saturday, Dec. 27, at the Sears Centre Arena. The first 2,000 fans who attend the game receive a free hot dog. Doors open at noon.
Against Milwaukee, Cerroni notched his second and third goals of the season, including a score that gave Chicago an 8-7 lead with 58 seconds left in the third quarter. But a Storm defensive mishap allowed Milwaukee to gain a 9-8 lead at the 6:15 mark of the fourth quarter, with Troy Dusosky awarded the goal. The Wave's J.P. Rodrigues added three-pointer when the Storm used Lazo Alavanja as a sixth attacker late in the fourth quarter.
Alavanja netted an unassisted restart goal at the 5:35 mark of the third quarter for his first tally of the season. Chicago's Zlatko Zebic opened the game with a two-point goal at the 5:08 mark of the first quarter.
In the net, Storm goalkeeper made four saves. That is because the Storm controlled much of the clock and generated scoring chances on the other end of the field. Along with Feenstra's 18 saves, Milwaukee's defense blocked eight shots and turned away a pair of Storm power play opportunities.
