Great Lakes Storm News Release
Birch Run, MI (March 10, 2005) â The Great Lakes Storm lost tonight against the Yakima Sun Kings 120-105 (6.0, 1.0) to finish the regular season 28-20. The Storm had already clinched the Eastern Conference regular season championship with the win last night, however, winning was important if they wanted to gain home-court advantage in the CBA Finals. Both teams played hard and unfortunately tempers flared which resulted in a few ejections. Yakima beat the Storm for the second time at home to improve to 17-30.
The two teams traded baskets in the opening quarter and Yakima eventually won the quarter 34-29 behind 12 points from Eric Williams. Yakima quickly pushed the lead to double digits in the second quarter and the Storm could not cut into the lead. Yakima went into halftime leading 71-60 along with winning the quarter 37-31. The two teams once again traded baskets in the third quarter as the Storm could not get any closer than nine points. The Storm, however, won the quarter 26-24 but went into the final quarter trailing 95-86. The Storm just could not catch the Sun Kings mainly because of their hot free-throw shooting as they finished the game 30-of-32 (94%) from the charity stripe. With less than five minutes remaining in the game Storm guard Mark Jones and Sun Kings forward Bakari Hendrix got tangled up underneath the basket. As the teams went down to the other end, they were still displeased with each other which resulted in Hendrix slapping Jones in the face. He retaliated with a punch and both were immediately ejected. The Sun Kings won the final quarter 25-19 and were able to beat the Eastern Conference regular season champs for the third time in four games this season.
The Storm's next game is on Tuesday, March 15h at home against the Rockford Lightning. Tip-off is set for 7:05 at the Birch Run Expo Center.
Game Highlights:
STORM: Ezra Williams 28 points, 9 rebounds, 9 assists
Doug Smith 27 points, 7 rebounds
YAKIMA: Jeryl Sasser 15 points, 23 rebounds
Eric Williams 20 points, 15 rebounds
