SIOUX FALLS, SD - The Colorado Ice (5-2) were defeated by the Sioux Falls Storm (5-2) on Saturday night at the Storm shelter with a final score of 45-43. Coming into this game the Ice had the better record, but the Storm was riding the wave of a 28 game home win streak.
Sioux Falls scored the first points of the game when fullback Michael Johnson ran in a 2-yard touchdown giving the storm an early 7-0 lead. Colorado answered right back on their first offensive possession of the game. Quarterback Willie Copeland connected with wide out Kyle Kaiser for a 45-yard touchdown making it 7-7.
With 9:05 left in the first quarter, Storm wide out Mike Tatum ran in a 13-yard touchdown making it 14-7 Sioux Falls over Colorado. Colorado put up a successful offensive drive on their next position but was halted inside the red zone. The ice settled for a 19-yard field goal by Aric Goodman making it 14-10 Storm lead at the end of the first quarter.
Sioux Falls began the second quarter with a 22-yard field goal by Parker Douglass to make it 17-10 Storm lead. Colorado tied the game at 17 all on their next possession when Copeland connected with Kaiser on a 39-yard touchdown pass.
At the 6:18 mark in the second quarter, Goodman put in a 30-yard field goal for the Ice giving Colorado its first lead of the game at 20-17. The Storm scored late in the second quarter to regain the lead when running back Tory Harrison ran in a 4-yard touchdown to make it 24-20.
The Ice began the second half with a 23-yard field goal by Goodman making it 24-23 Storm still hanging onto the lead. Sioux Falls answered on their first possession of the second half when Bryant took in a quarterback keeper for a 1-yard touchdown giving the Storm a 31-23 lead.
Kaiser gave the ice redemption on their next offensive possession coming up with his third touchdown reception on the night. With 4:52 remaining in the third quarter, the Storm led 31-29.
Sioux Falls scored again late in the quarter when Bryant found wide out Blake Wilson for a 8-yard touchdown pass. The Sioux Falls Storm led the Colorado Ice 38-29 at the end of the third quarter.
Colorado began the fourth quarter when Copeland connected with Kaiser for the fourth time of the evening. The Storm still led 38-37 after Colorado was successful on the two-point conversion making it a 1-point game.
The Storm gained momentum back when Harrison took in an 18-yard touchdown pass to make it a 45-37 Sioux Falls lead. Colorado was unsuccessful on their ensuing possession when the Storm forced a turnover on downs.
The ice caught a break defensively when Storm kicker Douglass missed a short field goal attempt keeping Colorado in the game at an 8-point deficit with 2:40 remaining.
Colorado scored a touchdown with 1-second left on a Hail Mary toss from Copeland to wide out Rashad Mason. The two-point conversion was unsuccessful giving the Storm a 45-43 win.
Storm quarterback Terrance Bryant threw for 181 yards and a touchdown. He also threw for a completion percentage of 90 percent with only throwing two incomplete passes. Tory Harrison ran for 63 yards and two touchdowns for Sioux Falls with his longest run being an 18-yard touchdown run.
Colorado quarterback Willie Copeland threw for 278 yards and five touchdowns against Sioux Falls. Four of the five touchdown completions were to wide out Kyle Kaiser who was the main target for 130 receiving yards.
Sioux Falls has increased their home win streak to 29 games with Saturday nights win over the Ice. The Storm hit the road next week to Chicago to take on the Slaughter with a Saturday 7:05 kick-off. They return to the Storm shelter on May 3, when they face the Nebraska Danger.
