Storm Can Claim Western Conference with Win

June 15, 2007 - United Indoor Football Association (UIF)
Sioux Falls Storm News Release

The Sioux Falls Storm of United Indoor Football (UIF) will host the Ohio Valley Greyhounds (2-8) for the very first time at the "Storm Shelter" on Saturday. After coming into existence in 2001, Ohio Valley has never made a trip to the Sioux Falls Arena. The Greyhounds are in need of a win as they are currently on a 3-game losing streak and sit at the very bottom of the Eastern Conference. Sioux Falls is coming off a convincing 50-25 win over the Sioux City Bandits last week. The Storm can claim the Western Conference Title with a win over Ohio Valley or a Billings loss. The two met for the very time in their history last year on April 29th when the Storm prevailed 51-24. The game is scheduled for a 7:05pm kickoff and can be heard LIVE on 1320 KELO AM or by logging on to www.siouxfallsstorm.com and clicking on "Listen LIVE."

Storm quarterback Terrance Bryant threw for 139 yards and 3 scores in last Saturday's victory. Bryant is now just 93 passing yards away from throwing 6,000 passing yards in his Storm career. The Storm's all-time rushing leader Marques Smith looks to continue his assault on the Storm record books. With last Saturday's performance in the books, Smith now owns the Storm single season record in rushing touchdowns. Justin Bivins previously held the record with 21 rushing touchdowns in 2004. Smith currently has the third most points scored in Storm history with 308 points and finds himself just one rushing touchdown away from 50 rushing TD's for his career. Wide receivers Allen Burrell, James Terry, and Leon Hall all hauled in touchdown passes from Terrance Bryant last Saturday. Terry surpassed 1,000 yards receiving last week for his Storm career and currently sits at 1,028.

The Storm defense once again shut down the opposing offense in the 2nd half. The defense has now allowed three or fewer points in the third quarter for seven consecutive games. No defense in the UIF has allowed fewer points (25.9 points/game) or yards per game (181.2 yards/game) this season than the Storm's "Thunder Defense". Linebacker Mark Blackburn leads the league in tackles per game with 7.8. Blackburn has been involved in 95 tackles this year and is on pace to break the Storm single season record of 137 tackles involved in, which is held by the Storm's current Linebackers/Special Teams Coach, Donny Hilsenroth. Defensive end Leif Murphy had a stellar game last week earning UIF Defensive player of the Week honors. Murphy finished the game with 6.5 tackles, 3.0 TFL, 1 sack, 1 fumble forced, and a fumble recovery for a touchdown. Leif is now the UIF leader in sacks with 10.5, with Storm defensive end Nate Fluit following in 2nd with 9.5 sacks.

The Ohio Valley Greyhounds are entering Saturday's game off a 34-20 loss to the RiverCity Rage. The Greyhound offense is putting up 225.2 yards per game. The Greyhounds are averaging 170.6 yards passing per game, which ranks third in the UIF. In four games, quarterback Oscar Davenport has thrown for 612 yards and 10 scores. Ohio Valley is 1-3 in those four games, but Davenport has put up a very impressive quarterback rating of 105.4. Running back Keith Brooks has the 6th most rushing yards in the UIF with 351. Brooks ran for 24 yards and a score in last week's loss. Davenport's go-to guy has been wide receiver Darrell Dowery. Dowery has 37 receptions for 457 yards and 5 touchdowns this season.

The defense has been an Achilles heel for Ohio Valley this season. The Greyhound defense has given up the most points per game in the UIF this season (47.8 points/game). Linebacker Devin Conwell ranks 7th in the UIF in tackles per game with 5.8. The 9th ranked passing defense is led by defensive back Durell Preston. Preston has picked off the ball twice this season and has broken up six passes. The front four is allowing 65.1 yards rushing per game, which ranks 7th in the league. Defensive lineman Jeffrey Candler has tallied 4.5 sacks and 10.0 tackles for loss, to lead the team in both categories.

The Storm will clash with the Colorado Ice on June 30th at the "Storm Shelter". The game theme will be "Kid's/Faith & Family Fun Night" and is presented by Orthopedic Institute. Individual tickets can be obtained by visiting the Arena Box Office or any Ticketmaster outlet, calling Ticketmaster at 334-8181, or purchasing from ticketmaster.com. Season tickets can still be acquired by calling the Storm office at 332-4225. Join "The Biggest Show in Town" as the Storm look for three championships in a row in 2007.
