HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. - The Chicago Storm held the Major Indoor Soccer League's most potent offense to one third-quarter goal as they defeated the Detroit Ignition, 9-2, on Friday at the Sears Centre Arena. With the victory, Chicago and Detroit share first place with an 11-5 record.

Matthew Stewart scored two second-quarter goals and goalkeeper Jeff Richey made 13 saves. Stewart's tallies gave the Storm a 4-0 lead as they never looked back. He has scored a goal in five straight matches and leads the Storm with 35 points. Richey improved to 8-3 in his 11th start in the net as the Storm earned their first victory against the Ignition this season in three tries.

Next up for the Storm is a road match against the Milwaukee Wave at 2 p.m. Sunday, at the U.S. Cellular Arena. The Storm are 2-1 against the Wave this season, and Milwaukee (11-6) is coming off a 12-7 loss to Baltimore on Friday. Chicago's next home match is Feb. 2, when the Storm host the New Jersey Ironmen. For most of the second half on Friday, the Storm clung on to a 4-2 lead after Detroit's Jamar Beasley scored at the 5:06 mark of the third quarter. The Storm gave themselves some distance when Randy Soderman netted a goal with 1:10 remaining in the fourth quarter for a 6-2 lead. Detroit went with Droo Callahan as a sixth attacker in the final minute, and Chicago's Stephen Armstrong put the game out of reach with an unassisted three-pointer with 29 seconds left.

Notes: The Storm's Carlos "Chile" Farias, who played with the Ignition last season, assisted two of Chicago's goals Friday. Chicago rookie Ian Bennett assisted Stewart's second goal in the second quarter. Detroit goalkeeper Danny Waltman, who started his MISL career with the Storm, made eight saves for the Ignition.
