Storm and Island Communities: A Great Combination
April 19, 2013 - National Basketball League of Canada (NBL Canada)
Summerside Storm News Release
(Summerside, PE) When Summerside STORM Owners Duncan Shaw and Darren MacKay decided to invest in an NBL Pro Basketball team two years ago for Prince Edward Island, one of the goals for them and their families was to use the pro sports franchise in helping raise needed funds for various groups and charities across the Island.
The first year for the franchise saw close to $25,000 raised. So going into season two the owners decided to double that and make the goal a hefty sum of $50,000 back into the community.
Well, during game three of the NBL Finals at Credit Union Place the fund raising buckets were passed throughout the crowd on behalf of Paediatric Beds for Island Hospitals as there is a need for more. This fund raising initiative inspired by Jackie Goodwin, a board member of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Foundation and wife of co-owner Duncan Shaw, collected close to $800. Not only was a significant amount of money raised but the issue of more paediatrics beds for PEI Hospitals also had a spotlight.
In the bigger picture, the $800 raised in Game Three of the NBL Finals brought the years total to over $95,000 back into the community for season number two and almost doubling the goal for the year.
Some of the Prince Edward Island charities and groups who were able to benefit from the Summerside STORM this season include:
* Bloomfield Elementary School, Three Oaks Athletics, and Island Boys and Girls Clubs with $6,468 from the Slam Dunk Charity Game.
* Island Food Banks $2,630
* Easter Seals $1,850
* PEI Minor Basketball $10,000
* Salvation Army $3,600
* American Red Cross for Disaster Relief $1,071
* Prince County Hospital "Lights for Life" $2,000
So while the STORM Pro Basketball Team owners are quite pleased with how the team performed on the court this season, they are very proud of helping contribute in the area of $125,000 over two years for Prince Edward Island groups and charities.
Who knows what the goal will be next year!
