HANOVER, N.J. - Franklin Castellanos scored the game-winning goal in second-half stoppage time to lead New York Red Bulls II to a 2-1 victory over Saint Louis FC on Sunday afternoon.
With the loss, STL FC falls to 5-8-7 (22 pts.) and has lost both of its matches against New York Red Bulls II this season. The Red Bulls move to 9-7-4 (31 pts.) with the win.
Saint Louis FC outshot New York 17-14, with shots on goal favoring STL FC 8-6.
New York took a 1-0 lead in the 40th minute through Marius Obekop, who also scored the opening goal in the Red Bulls' 4-1 vicotry over STL FC at World Wide Technology Soccer Park on June 27. Off a STL FC corner kick, New York broke out on a full-field counter attack that ended with Obekop slotting past goalkeeper Alec Kann.
Saint Louis FC opened the second half with numbers pushed forward in search of an equalizer. After going close on a number of opportunites, substitute Bryan Ciesiulka scored the equalizer with his first touch of the game in the 72nd minute. Bryan Gaul played a short pass to Ciesiulka at the top of the penalty area before the Marquette product netted his first goal of the season at the near post.
STL FC kept up the pressure and nearly grabbed the lead late on, but Mike Ambersley's close-range redirection was kept out by Red Bulls goalkeeper Santiago Castano. Castano made seven saves in the victory.
That save would prove vital, as substitute Castellanos scored the game-winner from 12 yards in stoppage time.
Saint Louis FC will be back at home next weekend, when it welcomes FC Montreal to World Wide Technology Soccer Park on Saturday. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 PM.
