Charlotte Stone Crabs News Release
PORT CHARLOTTE -- It was a wet day at Charlotte Sports Park on Friday, but the rain couldn't put out the fire from the Stone Crabs bats, as they powered their way to an 8-3 victory against the Bradenton Marauders.
The big blow came off the bat of Cody Rogers, who put the Stone Crabs up for good with a fourth inning, two-run homer to dead right field off Matt Benedict (0-1), giving Charlotte a 3-2 lead at the time. Mikie Mahtook and Robby Price also added three hits each to power the Charlotte offense.
C.J. Riefenhauser (7-2) started for the Stone Crabs and started shaky, but settled down to pick up his first win since May 15th and move into a tie for the FSL wins lead.
That shaky start for Riefenhauser saw two solo home runs land over the Charlotte Sports Park fence in the first two innings. Kirk Singer hit one with one out to left field in the first, and Carlos Paulino parked a 3-1 pitch over the right field fence.
The lefty settled down after that to finish 6-1/3 innings, allowing just those two runs while striking out five.
The Charlotte offense answered Singer's first inning blast with a Derek Dietrich RBI single in the bottom half of the frame to make it a one-run game.
As the rain started to pick up in the middle innings, so did the Charlotte bats. Rogers' blast plated two in the fourth, and Riccio Torrez plated Robby Price for the second of his three runs to make it 4-2 in the fifth.
Rogers picked up his second extra-base hit of the game with a double to lead off the sixth. Luke Bailey followed that with a single, and the left fielder Dan Grovatt bobbled the ball, allowing Rogers to come home for his third run scored of the game. Price singled home Bailey, and a Robi Estrada double finished the 4-run inning.
Charlotte tacked on three more in the bottom of the eighth on a bases-clearing triple by Phil Wunderlich to finish the scoring.
The Stone Crabs and Marauders will do battle to decide the series winner Saturday night in game three of the three-game series. Charlotte will send lefty Enny Romero to the mound, while Bradenton counters with fellow lefty Colton Cain. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
