Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
PORT CHARLOTTE -- The Fort Myers Miracle (12-9) have fallen from first place for the first time since April 19th after the Charlotte Stone Crabs (13-8) rallied with three runs in the eighth for a 5-2 final at Charlotte Sports Park on Friday night. Charlotte now leads the Florida State League South by one game.
The Miracle led for four innings and were tied for three others. The offense has sputtering in the series with just three runs in two games.
Blair Erickson took the blown save and the loss, despite striking out the first two in the eighth. After Erickson allowed a two-out hit to Matt Fields, manager Jeff Smith went to the bullpen. Alex Burnett would give up four straight hits before retiring the eighth and final hitter in the inning.
With Fields on first, Reid Fronk doubled as the first batter Burnett faced. Cody Cipriano ripped a two-RBI single into centerfield to put the Crabs ahead, 4-2. Cipriano scored on a single from the next batter, Nevin Ashley. Ryan Royster also singled before Omar Luna finally grounded out back to Burnett to end the eighth.
The Miracle got on the board in the first inning with a Steve Singleton double and a two-out Chris Parmelee RBI single. After the Stone Crabs tied it in the bottom of the third, Fort Myers answered with another two-out RBI single, this time from Chris Cates. Every run in this game -- all seven -- was scored with two outs.
Erickson (0-1) threw two and one-thirds innings, allowing just one hit, with a run coming to the plate after he'd already left the game. Erickson also struck out four of the seven outs he recorded. Burnett logged one-third of an inning with four hits and two runs. Deolis Guerra started and threw five and a third with a line of three hits, two runs (earned), three walks, and six strikeouts.
Matt Gorgen (1-0) got the win in relief for Charlotte. Alex Cobb started and gave up five hits, two runs, two walks, and struck out two in four innings.
Chris Parmelee and Rene Leveret both finished 2-for-3.
Ben Revere was hitless, but he made a showstealing catch in the second inning to rob Matt Fields of a home run. Revere tracked the surefire homer all the way to the wall, timed his jump, and leaped in the air. The outfielder reached over with his glove arm outstretched and brought the ball all the way back from the Miracle bullpen, then he fell onto the warning track to awed applause from the opposing crowd.
David Bromberg (1-0, 2.70) takes on Jesse Darcy (0-1, 6.05) in the third game of the series on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. in Charlotte.
