TAMPA, Fla. -- The Charlotte Stone Crabs shut out the Tampa Yankees, tallying 13 hits in a 7-0 win at a soggy George M. Steinbrenner Field on Sunday.

With the win, the Stone Crabs move into a tie for first place in the Florida State League South Division standings with the Bradenton Marauders.

The Stone Crabs wasted no time denting the scoreboard. Mike Sheridan began his hot night with a run-scoring single in the first, followed by a Mark Thomas base hit to plate another run. Sheridan finished the game with two singles and a double with an RBI and a run scored.

Tyler Bortnick provided the offense in the second as Charlotte plated two more runs. The designated hitter scorched a triple down the right field line to score Hak-Ju Lee, then crossed the plate himself on a throwing error by Tampa second baseman Emerson Landoni.

But the visitors weren't done. The Stone Crabs plated one more run off Yankees starter Brett Marshall in the third and put the game away in the sixth. After Lee walked with two outs, Ty Morrison sent a triple to right field and scored on a wild pitch to put Charlotte up 7-0.

That was more run support than Stone Crabs starter Jake Thompson needed. The righty had been deprived of offensive help this year, but not on Sunday afternoon.

Thompson (3-0) tossed six shutout innings, surrendering just five hits with four strikeouts and one walk allowed.

Marshall (7-7) gave up eight runs - seven earned - with four strikeouts and three walks in 5 2/3 frames and took the loss.

The Stone Crabs conclude their series with the Yankees Monday at George M. Steinbrenner Field. Righty Merrill Kelly (8-3) gets the nod for Charlotte opposite Tampa right-hander Michael O'Brien (4-2). First pitch is set for 7:00 p.m.
