Charlotte Stone Crabs News Release
DAYTONA BEACH -- A breakthrough night at the plate from Riccio Torrez helped the Charlotte Stone Crabs put away the Daytona Cubs by a 5-3 final score on Monday at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.
Torrez collected four hits on the evening, the first of which put Charlotte ahead to stay. His two-out, first inning single opened the scoring, plating Matt Joyce with the game's first run. Torrez has five hits over the first two games of the series after managing just two in his eight prior games.
Charlotte worked over Daytona starter Kyler Burke (1-3) for three more runs in the second inning. Kevin Kiermaier tripled and scored the first run of the frame as Cody Rogers, Joyce, and Hector Guevara each drove home runs to stretch the lead to 4-0.
Starter Braulio Lara (5-8) picked up the victory with six innings of three-run ball. Daytona made their only run at him in a four-run third inning rally.
The Stone Crabs bullpen performed the task of shutting the Cubs down after Lara departed. Left-hander T.J. Geith worked two shut-out frames, extending his scoreless streak to 14 innings.
Ninth inning duties once again fell to closer Chris Rearick, who bounced back from a walk-off loss on Sunday to earn his 18th save. Rearick tossed a scoreless inning to help Charlotte to tie the series at a game apiece.
The two clubs battle again on Tuesday as the Stone Crabs send right-hander Albert Suarez to the mound against fellow righty Matt Loosen of the Cubs. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
