Charlotte Stone Crabs News Release

PORT CHARLOTTE, FL - The Charlotte Stone Crabs have perhaps the best pitching staff in the Florida State League. That, combined with the league's hitting-repressive environment, means you'll see a lot of 1-0 games over the course of this year.

Unfortunately, some of them will go the other way.

Edgar Corcino lined a base hit to left to score pinch runner Austin Diemer following a Jordan Harrison balk, and the Fort Myers Miracle were the first to break through a scoreless tie to beat the Stone Crabs, 1-0 in 11 innings.

Harrison (0-1), making his second appearance for Charlotte in 2015, pitched a scoreless tenth and got the first out of the eleventh before Miracle catcher Brian Navaretto singled up the middle. With Corcino up, Harrison kicked his leg towards home before throwing over to first, and home plate umpire Reid Joyner called a balk.

However, neither Navaretto nor any Stone Crab defender (or, for that matter, field umpire Mike Savakinas) saw the call, and Navaretto was injured sliding into second on the ensuing rundown. Diemer replaced the fallen Miracle catcher at second base, and Corcino ripped the next pitch into left field to end the game.

The loss rendered moot an absolutely phenomenal performance by Hunter Wood, who rebounded from a tough outing on Monday against Tampa with arguably the best pitching performance from a Stone Crab in 2016. Wood allowed just one hit in seven smooth innings, walking two and fanning six. Wood needed only 84 pitches to complete the effort. In fact, the Miracle only had one hit going into the eleventh, as Brandon Koch fired two hitless innings to follow Wood and Harrison enjoyed a 1-2-3 tenth.

Conversely, the issues with men on that crept up Thursday night in St. Lucie reared their heads again in Fort Myers. While not as dramatic as Thursday night's 0-for-17 showing, the Stone Crabs were 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position, leaving eight men on base. Four of those baserunners were in scoring position.
