Charlotte Stone Crabs News Release
FORT MYERS, FL - 2015 Charlotte Stone Crab Blake Snell makes his Major League debut for the Rays on Saturday against the New York Yankees in the Bronx. If 2016 Charlotte Stone Crab Brent Honeywell is doing the same in April 2017, nobody should be surprised.
Honeywell was masterful for the fourth consecutive start, allowing just one earned run on four hits in six-and-two-thirds as the Stone Crabs won for the 8th time in 11 games, 4-2 over the Fort Myers Miracle at Hammond Stadium on Friday night.
The Stone Crabs ace came into the game with a 0.50 ERA, and he did nothing to put that number even close to 1.00 on Friday night. Honeywell (1-0) fanned seven Miracle hitters and did not walk any, running into just a tad of trouble in the third when an error and a couple of seeing-eye singles allowed two Fort Myers runs to score. Honeywell has a 26/2 K/BB ratio through his first four starts.
Charlotte's offense brought some spunk down I-75 as well. Manager Michael Johns shifted around the lineup, putting five guys in spots where they hadn't hit all season. Grant Kay, hitting eighth for the first time, cracked a monstrous two-run home run to the top of the berm in left field in the second, scoring first-time six-hitter Cristian Toribio to make it 2-0.
Things got weird with the score tied at 2 in the fifth. Jace Conrad doubled into left to start the inning, but with Kay at bat, Miracle starter Keaton Steele (0-2) picked off Conrad breaking for third. Steele ran right at Conrad, but the Stone Crab avoided the initial tag, requiring Steele to throw to third baseman Chris Paul for the out. Steele's lob went over Paul's outstretched glove and rolled towards the Miracle dugout, leaving Conrad safe at third. But the ball had plans for more, rolling its way into the opening in the guardrail on the far side of the dugout. With the ball out of play, Conrad was awarded home, and the Stone Crabs led 3-2.
Just to ensure their victory, the Crabs went after it again in the sixth. Bralin Jackson, batting cleanup for the first time in 2016, singled with one out. Toribio stepped up two batter later and, despite a broken bat, thwacked a double into the left field corner to score Jackson and push the lead to 4-2.
The series continues on Saturday night, as RHP Hunter Wood (1-1, 2.30) takes the ball for the Stone Crabs against Miracle RHP Felix Jorge (1-1, 1.42). First pitch is scheduled for 6:05, and you can hear all the action live on the Stone Crabs Radio Network. The Stone Crabs return home next Tuesday, April 26, starting a nine-game homestand.
