Charlotte Stone Crabs News Release
TAMPA, Fla. -- The Charlotte Stone Crabs picked up four runs in the ninth to battle back for a 7-4 win over the Tampa Yankees on Monday at Steinbrenner Field.
Charlotte won the last three contests in the four game set in Tampa and evened up the season series with the Yankees at four triumphs apiece.
With the victory, the Stone Crabs move into a tie for first place in the Florida State League South Division standings with the Bradenton Marauders, whose game was cancelled in Brevard County.
The Stone Crabs entered the top of the ninth trailing by a run, but did not give up. Tyler Bortnick began the frame with a walk and Mike Sheridan followed that up with a base hit up the middle. Charlotte then executed a double steal to move both runners into scoring position.
Reid Fronk sent a broken bat grounder to Tampa reliever Preston Claiborne, but he could not handle it cleanly, allowing the tying run to score. A batter later, Dustin Biell dragged a squeeze bunt down the first base line to plate Sheridan and give the Stone Crabs the lead.
Anthony Scelfo then lined a pinch-hit two run double to left to add the insurance.
The Stone Crabs finished the game strong, but also got out to an early lead. The visitors plated two runs in the first off of rehabbing New York Yankee Jeff Marquez.
But Tampa stormed back with a three run fifth inning, highlighted by Cody Johnson's two run single.
An inning later, the Yankees opened up the lead when David Adams laced a grounder into left field to give the home team a 4-2 advantage.
Fronk lifted a sacrifice fly to center field in the eighth to cut the deficit to one and the Stone Crabs rallied to win the game in the ninth.
Michael Jarman (4-4) picked up the win in relief after holding Tampa off the board in the seventh and eighth innings.
Josh Satow tossed a perfect ninth inning to earn his 11th save of the season.
Claiborne (2-5) was charged with the loss, as he was responsible for allowing the go-ahead run to score in the final frame.
After an off day, the Stone Crabs begin a series with the Palm Beach Cardinals Wednesday at Charlotte Sports Park. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
