STLFC Preseason Double-Header Weekend Preview
February 21, 2019 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Saint Louis FC News Release
ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Saint Louis FC will continue their preseason preparation with a USL Championship double-header weekend as the club hosts Tulsa Roughnecks FC on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. CT and Memphis 901 FC on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. CT at the World Wide Technology Soccer Park.
The games are open to the public with a purchase of a $10 ticket that grants admission to both games with proceeds benefiting the Special Needs Soccer Association (SPENSA) and Disabled Athletes Sports Association (DASA).
The team is expected to undergo extensive rotation this weekend as the coaching staff prepares for the regular season opener at home against Indy Eleven on March 9th at 1:00 p.m. CT at World Wide Technology Soccer Park. For STLFC Head Coach Anthony Pulis, this weekend serves as another opportunity for players to build match fitness and for younger players to get game experience.
"The objective this weekend is to get the majority of the first-team players 90 minutes under their belts," said Pulis. "We also have a number of Academy players and trialists in to help us out too which will be a good experience for them. The players have put an incredible amount of work in over the last four weeks so we know they will be playing under a lot of fatigue, which they wouldn't normally be doing in the regular season, but it's all part of our preseason building process as we get ready for March 9th against Indy Eleven."
Saint Louis FC will face Tulsa Roughnecks FC on Saturday after playing them on three occasions during the 2018 USL season which saw STLFC win all three games with seven goals scored and only two conceded in aggregate. Tulsa Roughnecks finished last season at the bottom of the USL Western Conference with a 3-19-12 record and conference-low 36 goals scored and 77 goals conceded. The team is coached by Michael Nsien who joined the club as an assistant in 2018 before finishing the season as the interim coach and receiving the full-time appointment in December 2018.
Memphis 901 FC will visit on Sunday as the club begins their first season as an expansion franchise in the USL Championship after being announced in January 2018. The club is owned and operated by a consortium that also oversees the Memphis Redbirds-the triple-A affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals-and plays their games at AutoZone Park. The team will compete in the USL Eastern Conference and face Saint Louis FC in the regular season at World Wide Technology Soccer Park on June 1st before hosting on September 21st at AutoZone Park. The team is coached by Tim Mulqueen who served as the goalkeeping coach in MLS for the MetroStars from 1996-1999 and the Kansas City Wizards from 2000-2005. He was recently part of the technical staff at Orlando City SC and took the head coaching job at Memphis in August 2018.
