ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Saint Louis FC Academy players recently attended Positive Coaching Alliance (PCA) seminars conducted at World Wide Technology Soccer Park on topics including leadership, positive initiation, and social media use.
The Positive Coaching Alliance has partnered with Saint Louis FC and St. Louis Scott Gallagher over the last couple years to deliver group workshops and online resources to enhance the positive character-building culture within the club. The presentations were given by Joe Scally, a PCA Trainer based in Chicago. The STLFC Academy U13-14 players listened to a presentation on "Making Teammates Better: Triple Impact Competitor" which focused on providing specific and truthful praise to teammates and pushing each other, positively, in difficult situations. The STLFC Academy U15-19 players learned about social media best-practices in a presentation titled "Honoring the Game" which focused specifically on creating a personal brand and how social media plays into people's perception of them.
"PCA hit it on the head with both presentations," said SLSG Technical Director Dale Schilly. "In my experience, 13s and 14s need to hear the importance of raising your own game, elevating teammates and respecting the game itself. I thought Joe did a great job of engaging the boys when presenting the "Triple Impact Competitor," which emphasizes those three concepts. The questions and comments from the players demonstrated the need of the discussion."
"I learned ways I can better lead and build up my teammates," added STLFC U14 IL player Nathan Ferguson.
"The Social Media presentation was also very good," said Schilly. "When Joe played a video of Pat Fitzgerald from Northwestern University speaking about the research his staff does into the social media habits of its recruits and players, the boys were very tuned-in. The presentation hit home and the tips to avoid-such as responding emotionally-are definitely things the players can take with them."
"Everyone can see what you post on the internet, and that is all they think you are, so give them a reason to believe you are something more," reflected STLFC U19 player Kippy Keller.
"Our mission at STLFC is to develop the young men in our program, both on and off the field, in a holistic way," said STLFC Academy Director Blake Decker. "Through these young men's passion for the game of soccer, there is an opportunity to discuss aspects related to their lives as soccer players and young men in our community which can have a positive impact on both their soccer and personal development. We are grateful for Joe Scally's time and to have the Positive Coaching Alliance as an ally in this mission."
