Sacramento Republic FC News Release

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Sacramento Republic FC announced today the club has signed midfielder Sam Werner to a USL Championship contract for the 2019 season with a club option for 2020, pending league and federation approval.

"Sam brings a winning mentality to our team and he has proven that he can step up in big moments," said Republic FC General Manager Todd Dunivant. "He causes headaches for opponents and will bring tenacity to our front line."

Werner joins Republic FC after a collegiate career with Stanford University where he won three consecutive NCAA championships from 2015-17. The Bozeman, Montana, native netted nine goals and added nine assists during his four seasons with the Stanford Cardinal, including the sudden-death goal in overtime during the 2017 College Cup that crowned the Cardinal champions and made them just the second-ever NCAA men's team to win three consecutive D1 titles. His performance in the final earned him 2017 College Cup Offensive Most Outstanding Player and 2017 Top Drawer Soccer College Cup Best XI honors, as well the Bob Murphy Award, which is "presented to the student athlete whose unforgettable performance in an athletics contest will secure a place in Stanford history."

Werner is a product of the Portland Timbers youth system and spent time with the club's U-18 team from 2012-14. After graduating from Stanford, Werner played abroad in Israel before eventually signing with Republic FC.
