Stingrays Weekly: Stingrays Prepare for Opening Round of 2013 Kelly Cup Playoffs

The South Carolina Stingrays wrapped up the 2012-13 regular season with a pair of games against the Greenville Road Warriors at the Bi-Lo Center in Greenville, S.C. for a week record of 2-0-0-0.

The series opened Thursday evening with the Stingrays defeating the Road Warriors 5-1. Forwards Peter Boyd (two goals, one assist), Robby Dee (one goal, two assists) and Eric Alexander (three assists) each recorded three-point games and goaltender Jeff Jakaitis made 26 saves in the victory.

On Friday, Alexander netted his first professional goal and forwards Andrew Cherniwchan and Justin Courtnall added tallies to push the Stingrays to a 3-1 victory. The Stingrays wrapped up the regular-season series against the Road Warriors with an 8-5-0-1 record and a 25-16-4-2 stance against South-Division opponents.

Taking the Lead

The Stingrays finished the 2012-13 regular season third in the South Division with 84 points and sixth overall in the Eastern Conference.

Forward Peter Boyd tied for fourth in the ECHL with five shootout goals.

Goaltender Ryan Zapolski is first in the ECHL with a 1.64 goals-against average, a .942 save percentage and eight shutouts. The Erie, Pennsylvania, native tied for second among netminders with 27 wins and stood fifth with 2,378 minutes played. Zapolski set a new ECHL all-time single-season record in goals-against average and tied for second all-time in save percentage.

Forward Tyler Johnson finished fourth among ECHL rookies with two shootout-winning goals and tied for third among first-year players with a shootout percentage of .750 (three goals on four attempts).
