South Carolina Stingrays News Release
North Charleston, SC - The South Carolina Stingrays and Head Coach Jared Bednar announced today that forward Pierre Luc-O'Brien has re-signed for the 2008-09 season. In keeping with club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
O'Brien, 26, appeared in 70 games last season, compiling 57 points (13g, 44a) to finish third on South Carolina. His 44 playmakers placed second on the club while his +15 plus/minus rating ranked fourth. In 18 playoff contests he added four points (2g, 2a) and 19 penalty minutes for the American Conference runners-up.
"Pierre's a guy we're looking for a lot of offense from again this season," Bednar said. "He was one of our most consistent players last year, and he'll certainly be a valuable asset for us whether it's on special teams or at even strength."
Prior to joining the Stingrays, O'Brien spent four years at Sacred Heart University, amassing 158 points (67g, 91a) in 142 career collegiate games. The 5-foot-9, 180-pound forward led the Pioneers in scoring three times, and was nominated for the Hobey Baker Award, given annually to the most outstanding player in college hockey, during the 2006-07 season.
"I'm excited to be back for another year," O'Brien said. "We have the makings of a great team, and I'm anxious to get the season going and challenge for the Kelly Cup."
Following the conclusion of his senior season at Sacred Heart, the Nicolet, Quebec, native signed with the American Hockey League's Portland Pirates, totaling two penalty minutes in two contests.
