Arizona Sting News Release

GLENDALE, ARIZONA --- Arizona Sting Head Coach and General Manager Bob Hamley announced Thursday the signing of forward Peter Veltman to a one-year contract.

"We are very pleased to be bringing Peter back to the organization," Hamley said. "He is an up-and-coming player in this league and we see a lot of potential in his abilities. We hope to use Peter in more of an offensive role in 2006."

Known primarily as a sound two-way forward with an aggressive playing style, this will be the 22-year old forward's third season with the Sting. Veltman showed some of his offensive potential in 2005, tallying 13 goals and 13 assists in 15 games as a sophomore. In his rookie season of 2004, the Georgetown, Ontario, native played more of a defensive role with the Sting; he scored 3 goals and added 3 assists in his 9 games while winning over half of his face offs (54.5%).

A nephew of Toronto Rock veteran Jim Veltman, Peter was originally drafted by the now defunct Ottawa Rebel in the first round (sixth overall) of the 2002 NLL entry draft following a stellar junior career in Canada. As a member of the Orangeville Northmen, Veltman registered 318 points and 187 penalty minutes in 118 career games. His professional career was sidelined temporarily in 2002 when he needed surgery to repair a torn ACL, but his tenacious spirit soon led him back to the National Lacrosse League, where he has become an important member of the Sting, playing a pivotal role in Arizona's Western Conference Championship of 2005. The Sting originally acquired the 6'2", 205-pound Veltman in 2003 through a trade with the Vancouver Ravens on draft day.

The Arizona Sting is a professional indoor lacrosse team playing in the National Lacrosse League (NLL). In only their second season in the Valley, the Sting finished the 2005 season with a 9-7 record, winning the Western Division playoffs before losing to the Toronto Rock in the Champion's Cup Final.
