Port Huron Icehawks News Release
PORT HURON, MI - Port Huron Icehawks right wing Cory Stillman netted a hat trick on Friday to lead the Icehawks to a 4-2 win over the Flint Generals at McMorran Arena.
The hat trick was the Icehawks second this season and came in the second game of the 2009-10 campaign. Mike Kinnie scored three goals last Saturday to lead the Icehawks to a win over the Fort Wayne Komets in the season opener.
The two teams exchanged goals throughout the game. The Icehawks kicked things off when Stillman scored his first goal of the season at 4:45 in the first period on assists from Derek Patrosso and Nick Lindberg. Flint tied the game exactly two minutes later with a goal by Jamie Schaafsma.
Port Huron took the lead early in the second period, when Kris Vernarsky crashed into a Flint player and the puck was knocked loose and slid into an empty net. The goal was shorthanded. As the period came to a close, the Generals evened the score again, this time with a goal by Nathan Ward.
The Icehawks regained the advantage in the third period after Generals forward Derek Parker received a game misconduct for a hit on Kevin Hansen, resulting in a five minute Icehawks power play. After another Flint player drew a penalty, giving the Icehawks a 5-on-3, Stillman capitalized on the situation and scored his second goal of the night at 9:06. As the game drew to a close, Stillman scored an empty net goal to secure the win.
The Icehawks are now 2-0-0-0 on the season, while the Generals fall to 1-2-0-0.
The Icehawks outshot the Generals 37-23 in the win. Goalie Adam Russo earned the win in his first start as an Icehawk, turning away 21 of 23 shots. Flint goalie Jean Francois Labbe made 33 saves on 36 shots.
