Rockford IceHogs News Release
Rockford, Ill.- A back and forth first period and then one team ran out of gas. That was the story in the Rockford IceHogs 7-4 win over the Elmira Jackals on Wednesday night at the Rockford MetroCentre. The IceHogs ran its season long unbeaten streak to seven (6-0-1) and the goal total marked the third straight game in which the Hogs netted six or more tallies and the fifth of six contests in which they accomplished the feet.
The opening period featured seven goals. Rockford grabbed the first two tallies to take the early lead. Winger Robin Big Snake knocked in a Chaz Johnson pass past Elmira goalie Dave Lemanowicz at 2:42 before Jason Ralph tallied at 3:36. Elmira climbed back into the game with a pair of power-play goals. Veteran defenseman Scott Drevitch slapped in his fourth goal of the season past Frederic Cloutier at 9:54 on the 5-on-3 advantage to cut the Jackals deficit to 2-1.
Rockford got a skater back, but that didn't faze the Jackals as winger Scott Wray punched a rebound past Cloutier for the club's second power-play marker at 10:35, tying the game. At 13:03 of the opening period, David Morelli put Elmira on top 3-2 when he put a rebound past Cloutier. Winger Frank Littlejohn ended the Jackals outburst with the club's third power-play goal of the period at 15:39.
Ralph and the IceHogs stopped the bleeding at 16:05 of the first period, moments after Littlejohn's tally appeared to put Elmira in control. Ralph knocked in his second of the night and fourth of the season to close the gap to 4-3 heading into the locker room.
Big Snake picked up his second lamp lighter of the evening to tie the contest at 4-4 4:48 into the second period, his 10th of the season. Winger Jason Notermann put Rockford back on top when he tipped a rebound past Lemanowicz at 5:49, his fourth goal of the campaign. Rockford extended its lead on the power play after Jesse Bennefield potted his team-leading 19th goal chasing Lemanowicz. Notermann capped the scoring with a short-handed goal at 7:48 of the third, the only blemish for Kris Tebbs on the night.
Hogs center Preston Mizzi chipped in four assists for Rockford, a team season high. Cloutier rebounded from a rough opening period to make 34 saves, picking up his 18th win of the season. Tebbs made 23 saves on 24 shots while Lemanowicz was the loser stopping 22 of 28 shots faced.
Next Home Game: Friday, Feb. 9 vs. Flint Generals. Game time is 7:05 p.m. Rockford returns home from a five-game road swing to face the Generals. The first 1,000 fans to the game will receive IceHogs Poster #5 from Pepsi, Medicine Man, Johnson Press and the Rockford Register Star.
