CHICO, CA - The Chico Outlaws outfield will have a decidedly different look when the team defends its Golden Baseball League title in 2008 - the Outlaws announced Tuesday that the contract of Steve Boggs has been purchased by the Chicago White Sox. Boggs becomes the second outfielder from the 2007 Outlaws to advance to affiliated ball; Daniel Nava's contract was purchased by the Boston Red Sox last October.
Boggs, who turns 24 years old when he reports next month to the White Sox spring training complex in Tucson, Arizona, posted the best numbers of his four-year pro career with the Outlaws in 2007. The San Diego native appeared in 74 games for Chico last season, batting .296 with three home runs, 45 runs batted in and 17 stolen bases. Steve piled up 99 hits on the year, second only to Yuma's Yosvany Almario among Golden Baseball League batters. The Outlaws leadoff hitter put together hitting streaks of 18 and 14 games, had 28 multi-hit games and collected four hits in a contest three times in '07. Two of Steve's three round-trippers came in one game July 20 against the Reno Silver Sox.
The White Sox is Boggs's second major league organization. Steve signed as a free agent with Colorado out of San Diego State in 2004 and spent three years in the Rockies farm system, but saw little playing time until joining the Outlaws last year. 2007 saw Boggs set single-season personal bests in every significant offensive category, including hits, runs scored (53), doubles (17), home runs, RBI and stolen bases. Steve had five hits in post-season play, helping Chico defeat the Long Beach Armada in the GBL Championship Series.
The Outlaws begin defense of its Golden Baseball League crown May 22 in Yuma, Arizona, with the 2008 home opener at Nettleton Stadium slated for May 30 against Long Beach.
