St. Louis Steamers News Release
(St. Louis, Feb. 7, 2004) St. Louis Steamers forward Sterling Wescott scored two first-quarter goals and later added two assists to lead the St. Louis Steamers to a 6-2 victory over the San Diego Sockers at the St. Charles Family Arena.
Mark Thomas (one goal, one assist), Sipho Sibiya (one goal, one assist), and Daryl Doran (one goal, one assist) also had strong games on offense, and goalkeeper Brett Phillips was solid in the nets as St. Louis improved to 7-14 on the season. The Steamers' six-goal outburst came against a San Diego defense featuring goalkeeper Victor Nogueira and defender Sean Bowers; both players recently were named to participate in the Feb. 29 MISL All-Star Game in St. Louis. San Diego (10-12) received goals from Joshua Elbaum and Robbie Aristodemo.
Wescott gave the Steamers the lead (1-0) at nine minutes, nine seconds of the first quarter when he slammed home a Sibiya pass off the end boards. Wescott scored again at 10:42 of the first on a beautiful feed from Doran. On the play, Doran shielded his defender and dropped a pass for Wescott, who blasted the shot into the upper right corner. Elbaum cut the San Diego deficit to 2-1 with a rebound goal at 13:52 of the second quarter.
Following a scoreless third quarter, the Steamers put the game away with four fourth-period tallies. Thomas scored on a header at 7:12 of the fourth quarter to make it 3-1; the assist went to Wescott. Then, at 10:16, Doran won a loose ball and fired a shot into the low right corner to make it 4-1. San Diego, which used an extra attacker for the final five minutes of the game, scored at 10:32 of the fourth on a four-on four goal from Aristodemo, who wore the extra-attacker shirt. Sibiya (13:19) and Steve Butcher (14:52) ran down loose balls to beat Aristodemo late in the game to seal the victory.
