Steelheads Win Again for Eighth Straight

GARY, Indiana (February 16, 2006) "" The Gary Steelheads advanced their win streak to eight straight games with a 123-95 victory over the Michigan Mayhem at the Genesis Center. In the process, the Steelheads passed the Rockford Lightning and moved into first place in the CBA's Eastern Conference. Gary also improved its season record to a high water mark 9 games over .500 at 24-15.
The Steelheads displayed great balance, with seven players in double figures. Guard Brian Chase paced the winners with 23 points, while forward Marlowe Currie hit for a career-high 22 points with 7 rebounds. Forward Carl Mitchell added 20 points with 9 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 blocked shots. Mitchell had the misfortune of missing 5 dunk shots (in 6 attempts). Had he connected on those "high percentage" shots, he would have broken his own CBA career high of 26 points.
Center Chris Alexander turned in an outstanding performance, with a double-double of 18 points (which tied his CBA high) and 20 rebounds in 32 minutes. He also blocked two shots. The Steelheads were without the services of forward Randy Holcomb, who missed his second straight game with a groin pull.
The first quarter was closely played, with each team building an eight-point lead but eventually ending the quarter tied at 28. The Steelheads won every quarter after that, earning 6ý valuable quarter points with the win.
The two teams meet again at the Genesis Center Friday night. The game will air over WJOB (1230khz) and WIMS (1420khz), following a prep basketball broadcast. The game can also be heard over the Internet through SportsJuice (www.sportsjuice.com), and the Gary feed can also be heard over Michigan station WEFG-FM (97.5mhz).
