Gary Steelheads News Release

GARY, Indiana (December 21, 2005) - The Gary Steelheads moved to strengthen their front line by signing forward Edmund Saunders and trading for center Chris Alexander. The moves were made, in part, to try and reduce a problematic rebounding deficit for the team.

Saunders is a 6-foot-8 athletic forward, who can play both the small and power forward spots. He has an extensive overseas resume, including playing in Argentina and the Dominican Republic this season. He played for the Charlotte Hornets entry in the Reebok Rocky Mountain Review this past summer. During 2004-05, Saunders played briefly with the New Jersey Skycats of the ABA. In 5 games, he averaged 22.0 ppg. and 9.6 rpg. while shooting .520 from the field. He also went to NBA camp with the New Jersey Nets. Saunders played his college basketball at Connecticut and helped the school to an NCAA championship in 1999.

The Steelheads acquired 7-foot-1, 260-pound center Chris Alexander from the Dakota Wizards for cash considerations. He is currently averaging 8.6 ppg. and 6.6 rebounds. He is tied for 7th in the CBA in blocked shots with a 1.1 bpg. average. Alexander had his best game of the year in a game against the Steelheads on December 3rd, scoring a season-high 16 points and grabbing 17 rebounds in 42 minutes. He also blocked two shots. Gary won the game in overtime, 137-127.

Alexander has had professional stops in China, the USBL and the ABA. He played his college basketball at Iowa State and Indian Hills Community College, and his high school ball at nearby Thornton Township High School in Harvey, Illinois.

In order to make room for the new acquisitions, the Gary Steelheads released center Darrell Johns and forward Shelly Clark.
