Gary Steelheads News Release

Gary, IN:  The Gary Steelheads today announced that David Graves will return to the Gary Steelheads for the second consecutive season.    The 6-foot-6 Graves averaged 14.9 ppg. and 3.8 rpg. last season for the Steelheads.  Graves exploded for a 35 point effort against Sioux Falls on March 2nd.  Graves was awarded the CBA Player of the Week for the week ending February 28th, for averaging 24 ppg. and 9.6 rpg. on the week. Graves was also 3rd in the CBA in both 3 point percentage (.442, 89/201) and free throw percentage (.894 127/142) last season.  Graves is the Steelheads all-time leader in 3's made with 89.    Graves has also seen time in Germany and for the Dodge City (Kan.) Legend of the United States Basketball League, where he was the league's Sixth Man of the Year. Graves also played with the Chicago Bulls in the 2002 Rocky Mountain Revue and the Boston Celtics in the Shaw Summer Classic. He was the last player waived by the Bulls in their 2002 training camp.   As a senior at Notre Dame, Graves was a Big East Honorable Mention selection while averaging 14.0 points, 4.9 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game in 31 games for the Fighting Irish. He was second on the team in steals with 49. As a junior, he set a Notre Dame single-season 3-point field goal mark with 83.   The Lexington, Ky. native was one of three finalists for Kentucky's Mr. Basketball award.   "David is a key component of our offense," said Steelheads Head Coach Duane Ticknor.  "His shooting skills and ability to stretch the defense are very important to us as a team.  Plus having another starter from last season's playoff team is always helpful.  We expect big things from David this season and we know that he will be able to meet those expectations"   "I am happy to have the opportunity to be back in Gary.  To be able to play with Shelly, Jarrod, and Jemeil again is something that I really look forward to.  They are all great players and they each make me a better player in their own special way.  We made it to the playoffs as a team last season which has great, but the goal is to win a championship and that's what I want to do this season in Gary," said Graves.
