Grand Rapids Hoops News Release

Grand Rapids, Mich. – The Grand Rapids HOOPS fell to the Gary Steelheads 102-85 at the Genesis Convention Center, their fourth consecutive defeat. Bryant Notree scored 27 points to lead the Steelheads to their franchise-record seventh straight victory.

After being tied at the half, Gary used a 19-6 run in the third quarter to extend a 58-54 lead to a 77-60 advantage. Silas Mills and Darrin Hancock contributed 18 points apiece for the Steelheads, as Gary was not slowed by limited production from starters Oliver Miller and Jemeil Rich, who only scored eight and five points, respectively.

Grand Rapids was led in scoring by Larry Ayuso, who scored 18 of his 29 points in the first half. Alex Scales also registered 17 points of his own.

Grand Rapids was able to take the fourth quarter 27-25 to take two of a possible seven quarter points on the night.

The first half was a slow-paced, slugfest as Gary went to the line 16 times, connecting on 11. The half ended at 46-46 as the two teams split the first two quarters at 19-19 and 27-27.

With 45 seconds remaining in the second quarter, the HOOPS' Jerald Honeycutt and the Steelheads' Chris Allen were caught up in a skirmish after one of the many free-throw attempts and both were ejected from the game. Honeycutt scored eight and Allen one at the time of their ejection.

Immanuel McElroy got his first start of the season in place of Ayuso, while Murdock joined his backcourt mate on the bench to begin the game. After missing Saturday night's loss to Great Lakes, Murdock entered the game in the second quarter and proceeded to score eight consecutive points to keep the HOOPS in the game. However, he did not see action in the second half.

Grand Rapids will now travel to face the Great Lakes Storm on Thursday night at the Birch Run Expo Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
