Gary Steelheads News Release
The Gary Steelheads return home for their first meeting with the Idaho Stampede this season. Gary holds a very narrow lead of a single quarter point over the Rockford Lightning in the Eastern Conference of the CBA.
After defeating the Lightning last Thursday night at the Genesis Center, the Steelheads lost the rematch Sunday at the MetroCentre in Rockford, 124-123.
The Steelheads earned two quarter points in the defeat, winning the first and third quarters. The possessed a one-point lead going into the fourth quarter, which the Lightning won 21-19.
Gary was paced once again by Jimmie "Snap" Hunter, who tossed in 39 points for the second time this season. Eric Chatfield added 18 points, while Randy Holcomb scored 17 points with 6 rebounds and 7 assists. The Lightning were paced by Cordell Henry, who's 24-point total included the game-winning basket with six seconds remaining.
For the 9th time in 11 games, the Steelheads were outrebounded by their opponents. Rockford claimed the boards, 55-37. Marlowe Currie paced Gary rebounders with 7, while connecting on 7 of the 9 shots he took. 7-1 center Darrell Johns did not play in the game.
Idaho ended a four-game road losing streak at Michigan, winning 94-85 Saturday night. The win pulled the Stampede within a game of .500 in the CBA's Western Conference. Jermaine Boyette fired in 27 points, David Jackson and Matt Freije each contributed 19 points to the win. Center Eric Chenowith notched a double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds.

- Tonight's game is the 16th meeting between the Steelheads and the Stampede. Gary has a 9-6 lead in the series, with the teams splitting four games last season. - The home court advantage has not been prominent in the CBA's Eastern Conference. Going into tonight's game, the Gary Steelheads have a 3-3 record at the Genesis Center this year. Only Rockford in the East has a winning record at home this season (3-2). All Western Conference teams have winning records at home. The Stampede have a 4-2 record at the Qwest Center in Boise, but are 1-4 on the road. Last year, CBA home teams won at a percentage of .641. This year, the collective home records of CBA teams to date are 26-16 (.619). - For the second straight week, the CBA went with Hunter for their Player of the Week. Last week, it was Jimmie "Snap" Hunter of the Steelheads (29.0 ppg., 5.8 apg). This week, the honor goes to Brandon Hunter of the Sioux Falls Skyforce (26.3 ppg., 13.3 apg). The Steelheads nominated Randy Holcomb for the honor. Holcomb averaged 25.0 ppg. And 7.3 rpg. for the week, along with 5.7 assists. He scored a CBA career-high 32 points against Yakama on Tuesday night. - Fox Sports Net is preparing a feature on "Snap" Hunter and the Steelheads. A video crew has been videotaping practices and covered Sunday's game at Rockford. The feature will air within the program "Hoops." - The Steelheads have moved to strengthen their front line by adding CBA veteran forwards Shelly Clark and Kevin Frey. Clark is a fan favorite who has represented the Steelheads in the CBA All-Star Game the past two seasons. He is the team's career leader in rebounding. Frey played his first game against the Lightning Thursday night, scoring 17 points and grabbing 4 rebounds in 17 minutes. - The Steelheads have committed 61 turnovers in their past three games, up from their average of 14.3 per game. - The Idaho Stampede is adjusting to the absence of 6-foot-8 forward Josh Davis. The former CBA MVP was called up by the Milwaukee Bucks on December 5th. Davis was the second of three NBA call-ups to date this season. - The Stampede have been playing tough defense, holding their opposition under 100 points per game (99.4 ppg). Opponents are shooting .441 from the field against them.
