The Birmingham Steeldogs are still searching for a few good men. This Sunday, Feb. 19, at SportsBlast off of Highway 280, the Steeldogs will host their second open tryout camp preceding the start of the team's historic seventh season. Registration will begin at 10:00 a.m. with drills starting at 11:30 a.m. and lasting until 1:30 p.m. A registration form is available on the Steeldogs' Official Web site, Steeldogs.com, above the "League Standings" on the right-hand side of the Web page.
"We still have several roster spots to fill and we hope to accomplish a great deal of that at this tryout," Steeldogs Head Coach Ron Selesky said. "We are committed as an organization to bringing in players not just from the Birmingham area but the entire state of Alabama. "Every player that shows up to this tryout will be given a legitimate shot at being a part of a championship team in 2006."
Participants can pre-register by downloading and printing the Web site form, filling it out and faxing it to the team's front office. The cost of registration for pre-registrants will be $40, while those who register the day of the tryout will be charged $50. Acceptable methods of payment include cash and money orders; no personal checks will be accepted. Credit cards will only be accepted from those who pre-register; none will be accepted on the day of the tryout. The Steeldogs' fax number is 205.458.8489.
Players will be evaluated in the 40-yard dash, the NFL shuttle run and the "L-Drill" as performed at NFL combines.
SportsBlast employs an AstroTurf surface, so players will be required to wear turf shoes or other flat-soled athletic shoes. No cleats or metal spikes of any kind are allowed. The facility is located off of U.S. Highway 280 in northern Shelby County. From Birmingham traveling on Highway 280 East, the facility is located about 3 miles from the Highway 119 intersection on the left.
