Manchester Wolves News Release
The arenafootball2 league office announced today that wide receiver/defensive back Heyward Skipper and kicker Matt Russell have been assigned to the Manchester Wolves, New England's professional football team.
Skipper (6-0, 184) returns to the Wolves for a second season after a successful 2005 campaign. The Flushing, N.Y. native played in 10 games before being placed on the injured reserve list with an ankle injury. Skipper was a strong contributor, finishing fourth on the squad in scoring with 11 touchdowns, receptions (43) and receiving yards (456). He was named Offensive Player of the Game on May 20, 2005, for his seven receptions for 66 yards and two scores performance against the South Georgia Wildcats. As an offensive player at Troy State University from 1999 through 2002, he ranked fifth on the list of the Trojan's all-time best receivers.
"Skipper will take on a bigger offensive role this year," Wolves Coach Ben Bennett said. "We got pretty big things from him last year until he hurt himself, so we didn't see his full potential. If he stays healthy, he should put up some big numbers."
Russell (5-11, 175) could be the placekicking answer for the Wolves, as he joins the team as the potential starting kicker. Unable to settle on a consistent kicker over the past two seasons, Russell's experience could win him that role on the 2006 squad. He comes to the af2 after spending a year of indoor experience in Peoria during the 2005 season. Serving as a placekicker, he led the league in yards per kickoff, tackles for a kicker (11.5), as well as amassing three Special Teams Player of the Week Honors. In his collegiate career, he was a member of the 2002 Ohio State University National Championship Team.
"I received a recommendation about Matt from a coach that I respect very highly," Bennett said. "He should come in and be a big contributor to the team."
