Alabama Steeldogs News Release

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – With just 57 days remaining until the Birmingham Steeldogs kick off their historic sixth season against the San Diego Riptide in the BJCC Arena, Head Coach Bobby Humphrey has been busy building his 2005 roster.

The Steeldogs have been assigned 25 players by the af2 league office as of Thursday, Feb. 10. These players will be among the group competing for roster spots during the team’s upcoming training camp.

Eight players from the 2004 Steeldogs squad have been re-assigned to the current roster. The returning players breakdown into three positions, including five offensive/defensive linemen (David Daniel, Derrick Cloud, Rodney Jones, Quinan Johnson and Larry Paul), two wide receiver/defensive backs (Carlos McNeary and Eldrick Hill) and one defensive specialist (George Williams).

The Steeldogs have also been assigned several players with af2 experience outside of the Magic City. Included in this group are a quarterback (Caleb Slover), three wide receiver/defensive backs (Reggie Jones, Terence Samuel and Cordell Thornton), one fullback and linebacker (Roger Terry) and two offensive/defensive linemen (Keith Stephens and Deon White).

Slover brings a wealth of experience to Birmingham this year, having spent time with four af2 teams over the past three seasons. In his career, Slover has completed 589 of his 1,111 pass attempts for 7,640 yards, 155 touchdowns and 41 interceptions. He has also rushed 142 times for 393 yards and 22 touchdowns.

Several first-year players are hoping to earn their stripes with the orange and black in 2005. The Steeldogs’ rookie class breaks down into six positions, including one quarterback (Brian Balazik), one offensive specialist (Damon Thomas), three wide receivers and defensive backs (Devlon Holmes, Marcus James and Qiyamah Khalifah), one fullback and linebacker (Kevin Landry), two offensive linemen (Michael Major and James Malone) and two defensive specialists (Emmanuel Ajiodo and Brandon Reed).

“I’m very excited about the group of guys we’re bringing in this year,” Steeldogs Head Coach Bobby Humphrey said. “We have a good number of players returning from last year, and when you add to that experienced af2 players like Caleb Slover and Terence Samuel, you’ve really got something special.

The Steeldogs kickoff their sixth season at the BJCC Arena on Saturday, April 9 at 7 p.m. against the San Diego Riptide. For ticket information, contact the team office by phone at 205.458.8833 or go online at www.steeldogs.com.
