Steel Tops Erie
May 27, 2011 - Southern Indoor Football League (SIFL)
Trenton Steel News Release
TRENTON, N.J. - From humble beginnings, an 0-3 start, the Trenton Steel have forged themselves into a team on the verge of securing a Southern Indoor Football League playoff spot.
Coach Rod Miller's club, with a resounding 78-53 win over rival Erie in front of 2,857 at the Sun National Bank Center, needs a win over Harrisburg in its last game June 11, or a loss by Richmond in any of its final three games, to secure a playoff spot.
"This was a championship effort,'' said Miller. "We have one more to go and we have to keep our focus.''
The Steel played superlative defense against the high-powered Erie attack led by quarterback Adam DiMichele. The former Temple star completed 21-of-39 for 296 yards and six touchdowns, four to Tyrone Morris and two to Kevin Concepcion, but he was harassed by a pass rush led by Melik Brown for much of the game.
Steel quarterback E.J. Nemeth completed 22-of-31 for 249 yards and six touchdowns. With Erie often double-covering Oderick Turner, Nemeth threw to Damon Harrison, who had nine catches for 141 yards and five touchdowns. Harrison also returned a kickoff for a touchdown.
The Steel, with the 25-point win, has the tie-breaker with Erie should the Northeast Division end in a tie. Still, a fourth seed looms in the SIFL playoffs for Trenton, which haswon seven of its last eight.
SIFL officials have set June 18 for the playoffs, with the Columbus (Ga.) Lions and Albany (Ga.) Panthers holding the top two seeds. Erie is presently third and the Steel fourth, with a trip to Georgia looming.
"Let's remember we still have one more,'' reaffirmed Miller, whose team has its bye next week. "We still have business to take care of.''
