Chicago Steel News Release
GENEVA, ILLINOIS - Justin Robbins recorded a 32-save shutout Sunday as the Chicago Steel defeated the Central Illinois Flying Aces 3-0 at Fox Valley Ice Arena, snapping a four-game losing streak. Brian Hurley, Baker Shore and Todd Goehring each scored for the Steel (20-18-1-4, 45 pts.) in the game's first ten minutes.
Robbins' blanking of the Flying Aces (12-30-2-3, 29 pts.) marked his first career USHL shutout and the Steel's first shutout since Game 3 of the 2017 Clark Cup Final. Goehring's tally marked his first career USHL goal, and Hurley's was his first since being acquired from Fargo in a Feb. 5 trade.
Following a 3-2 shootout loss to Green Bay Friday, the Steel finished the weekend earning three of a potential four points.
Hurley's goal opened the scoring on Chicago's first shot of the afternoon. After a faceoff to the right of Flying Aces goaltender Ryan Snowden, Samuel Bucek collected the puck and sent it across to Hurley, whose wrist shot from the point found space over Snowden's glove.
Shore recorded his 19th goal of the season by tapping in a timely feed from Graham Lillibridge at 7:05 to make it 2-0.
Chicago's flurry continued just over two minutes later when Goehring crashed the net to jam in a rebound off a Tim Clifton shot to give the Steel a 3-0 advantage just 9:12 into the game.
Robbins and the Steel killed a combined 2:07 of 5-on-3 power play time for the Flying Aces in second and third periods to secure the shutout. Snowden made 38 saves for the visitors.
March 2-4 marks the only three-home-game weekend for the Steel this season. Friday, March 2 is Innovation on Ice: A Power Play for Geneva Schools presented by FONA International as the Steel take on the Omaha Lancers at 7:05 p.m. The Steel will be wearing special Geneva Vikings jerseys to be auctioned off during the game to benefit the Geneva Academic Foundation. It's a Meijer Kids Day - kids 12 and under can receive an Attack Preferred ticket, popcorn, Steel light-up wand and post-game autographs, all for just $10.
Saturday is College Night against Sioux Falls and features a $10 ticket offer for college students with a valid ID. The Steel then close out a season-long seven-game homestand with A Day for the Trolls against Youngstown on a Steel Family Sunday. Sunday's 3:05 p.m. game features a post-game Skate with the Steel, as well as the Steel Family Pack offer - purchase four tickets, four hot dogs, four sodas (or waters) and four chuck-a-pucks starting at just $48.
