Chicago Steel News Release
GENEVA, Ill. - The Chicago Steel have acquired veteran forward Jaxon Nelson from the Sioux Falls Stampede in a trade announced Friday which sent defenseman Matt Kessel and a fourth-round pick in the 2019 USHL Phase II Draft.
Nelson, 18, appeared in 112 games for the Stampede over the past two seasons, recording 35 points (15-20-35). In April, NHL Central Scouting ranked Nelson 141st among North American Skaters for this month's NHL Draft. Nelson, a 6-foot-4 native of Magnolia, Minn., is committed to the University of Minnesota (Big Ten). He participated in both the 2017 CCM/USA Hockey All-American Prospects Game and the 2018 USHL/NHL Top Prospects Game.
"Jaxon Nelson is a skilled player with an exceptional mind," said Steel Head Coach Greg Moore. "As a young, developing player, we're very excited to get him to Chicago to work with our resources here at the Steel and Belfry Hockey to provide him the best opportunity to reach his full potential and we anticipate big things from Jaxon."
Kessel appeared in 20 regular season games for the Steel (0-3-3) as well as three playoff games. The Miami University (NCHC) commit also participated in the 2018 USHL/NHL Top Prospects Game and was acquired by Chicago in a Feb. 5 trade with the Fargo Force.
Today through Monday, the Steel hold their annual Tryout Camp at Fox Valley Ice Arena, which will be open to the public to view with a featured all-star game on Monday, June 11 at 11:00 a.m.
