Quad City Steamwheelers News Release
DAVENPORT, Iowa â From the proverbial Halls of Montezuma to the shores of Sylvan Slough, Moline-native and ex-Marine Ky Soucinek has been signed as a defensive end. The 6-5, 285-pound Soucinek will see action in the Happy Joe's "Pizza Bowl" charity football game vs. Green Bay at The MARK this Monday, March 28 at 6:30 PM. Soucinek will participate in practice sessions on Sunday at The MARK at 11 a.m.-1 p.m. and 5 p.m. -7 p.m.
Tickets for "Pizza Bowl" are available at Happy Joe's restaurants throughout the Quad City Area and are priced at $5 for adults and $3 for children 14 and under. Proceeds from tickets sold at Happy Joe's locations will be donated to QC Families in Support of Our Troops (QC F.I.S.T.).
Soucinek graduated from Moline High School in 1989 and joined the Marine Corps in 1990. By 1992, he found himself playing for the "All Marine" Football Team which he participated with until he finished his commitment to the Corps two years later.
The former Maroon's "dream shot" to play professional football in his hometown occurred in a circuitous fashion. The Quad City Radio Group, a media sponsor of the game, was planning a promotion to find the classic "guy off the street" to don a Steamwheelers uniform for one game.
Soucinek, a disc jockey for KUUL-FM, heard the idea and wondered, "Why not me?" When he made the station brass aware of his experience, it convinced them to make him their "man in uniform" Monday night. According to head coach Rick Frazier, Soucinek will see playing time in the game.
Soucinek is excited about "getting in the trenches" at The MARK. But, just as importantly he is hoping that the promotion generated by his signing and participation in the game will boost attendance and raise more funds for QC F.I.S.T.
The Steamwheelers are preparing for their sixth season of play as a charter member of the af2, under Frazier, a veteran head coach in the Arena Football League. The 2005 af2 season is set to kickoff the first weekend of April, with the Steamwheelers opening their season on the road the following weekend at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. Their first home game of the 2005 season will come on Saturday, April 16, at 7:30 p.m., when they host the Bossier-Shreveport Battle Wings. Season tickets are now on sale and can be purchased by calling the Steamwheelers office at (563) 324-4888 or toll free at 1-866-STEAMTIX.
