St. Louis Steamers News Release
The Steamers won their seventh straight game in a dramatic 6-5 overtime duel against the Philadelphia Kixx Saturday night at the Wachovia Spectrum. The Steamers improved to 8-2 on the season, while Philadelphia dropped to 3-5. The Steamers remain one game behind the first-place Milwaukee Wave, who defeated the Baltimore Blast Saturday night.
Philadelphia scored the lone goal of the first quarter when a shot by Andy Guastaferro rebounded off the boards and was headed into the net by David Castellanos at 8:31.
The second quarter went scoreless until the final seconds (14:57) when St. Louis defender Genoni Martinez scored a restart goal, assisted by Carlos "Chile" Farias, to send the teams into the halftime break tied 1-1.
The Steamers went ahead 2-1 at 3:48 of the third quarter on a restart goal by Mariano Bollella with an assist going to Farias. Minutes later, officials sent St. Louis midfielder Sandre Naumoski to the penalty box on a handball call and the Kixx drew even (2-2) when Shaun Boney beat goalkeeper Brett Phillips on the penalty kick at 5:22 of the third. St. Louis quickly regained the lead (3-2) when Jamar Beasley took a restart pass from Martinez and put a shot into the upper left corner of the net at 5:43. The third quarter expired with the Steamers holding the 3-2 lead.

Philadelphia knotted the score again (3-3) at 8:10 of the fourth quarter when a header by Kevin Sloan found the back of the net. Genoni Martinez got his second tally of the night to put St. Louis back on top (4-3) with a restart goal at 8:48. Less than a minute later (9:26), St. Louis went up 5-3 on a goal by Jeff DiMaria. Philadelphia put the sixth attacker in play and used the man advantage to pull back within one of the Steamers (5-4) on a goal by Goran Vasic at 11:53. The KiXX evened the score, 5-5, when Pat Morris drilled a shot from Drew Kopp into the net at 14:46 to send the contest into overtime. Immediately after Morris' goal, St. Louis Coach Omid Namazi was ejected by officials when he walked onto the turf, sending the Steamers into overtime without a coach on the bench.
Steamers defender D.J. Newsom scored the game winner on a restart opportunity in overtime to give the Steamers their seventh straight win by the score of 6-5.
The Steamers are back in action tomorrow afternoon when they tangle with the Storm in Chicago at 4:00 p.m. (CST).
