St. Louis Steamers News Release
ST. LOUIS - The St. Louis Steamers (13-4) stayed perfect at home by defeating the Chicago Storm (7-10), 4-0 in front of 9,123 fans. With the win, the Steamers are now 8-0 at home. The Milwaukee Wave were taken down, 6-5, by the Baltimore Blast in 1st Mariner Arena in Maryland, putting the Wave and the Steamers with identical records but St. Louis owns the tiebreaker, putting them in first place. Chicago remains in fourth place now 6 and a half games back.
The highlighted performance of the night came from Steamers goalkeeper Brett Phillips. The MISL All-Star made 8 saves on 8 shots faced to earn a shut out. It was the first time the Chicago Storm franchise has ever been shut out. Phillips did get some help from back up keeper Bayard Elfvin when Brett was called for a blue card for tripping. Elfvin made a save while Phillips sat in the box, returning 2:13 seconds later. This is the first shut out of the season in the MISL.
CBC grad Jeff DiMaria scored two goals for the Steamers, both in the third quarter. They were his sixth and seventh of the season. It was in that quarter St. Louis extended their 1-0 halftime lead. Mariano Bollella scored the first goal of the night off of a restart from Chile Farias 9:43 seconds into the game. It was Bollella's fourth game-winning goal of the season, which leads the team. Farias's assist gives him 21 on the season. Coming into the game, he was leading the MISL in that category. The other goal was off the foot of Sterling Wescott, his ninth of the season.
The next game is going to be for sole possession of first place as they take on the Milwaukee Wave in Savvis Center next Sunday (Feb. 12th) at 2:35. The night before is the MISL All-Star game in Milwaukee. Wave Head Coach Keith Tozer and Steamers Head Coach Omid Namazi each will serve as coaches for the MISL All-Stars in that game. The next night, the two will square off on opposing benches. The winner will hold the rights to first place, all alone.
