St. Louis Steamers News Release
Beasley Likes To Take Three's:
All-Star forward Jamar Beasley recorded a hat trick in the 6-3 win over the Milwaukee Wave Sunday afternoon. One of the goals was the game-winner. But it wasn't the first time Beasley reached that achievement, Sunday's accomplishment marked the third time this season he has scored three goals in one game. The other occurrences took place on Jan. 24th and Jan. 28th. Each of those games were against the Baltimore Blast. His three goals against the Wave were hugely important because the 6-3 win placed the Steamers ahead of Milwaukee in the MISL standings into first place. Beasley leads the team with 21 goals on the year. Shaun David and Sonny Naumoski are tied for second on the team with 12 goals a piece.
Steamers Step Up the "D":
Steamers starting goalkeeper Brett Phillips earned his twelfth win on the season, which leads the MISL, but the Steamers defense is putting their own stamp with every win. In the 6-3 win over Milwaukee, Phillips faced only six shots on goal. The Defense made a total of seven blocks and were led by Randy Soderman and Jeff DiMaria each having two. Defender D.J. Newsom was another standout with a block and continually stalling the Wave's offense by disrupting their flow into the Steamers zone. Newsom's performance earned him with another MISL Defender of the Week Award. He also won the award on Jan. 16th. The defense led to many offensive opportunities on the other end. St. Louis out shot Milwaukee 19-6 in the second half, a half which the Steamers led the scoring, 5-1, including scoring the final five goals of the game.
Reiniger is Closing in on Milestone:
The elusive 600 goal mark keeps eluding Joe Reiniger. The Collinsville, IL native is nearing in on 600 career professional indoor soccer goals for a career. He is currently at 598 indoor goals. Being from the St. Louis area, he would like to be able to do it at home. In the Steamers 6-3 win over Milwaukee, Reiniger had plenty of chances but, unfortunately for him, Wave goalkeeper Nick Vorberg got in his way. There were a couple of instances when Reiniger just missed the net or Vorberg made an acrobatic save. And he was receiving help from his teammates. When Milwaukee placed an extra attacker on the field, Head Coach Omid Namazi kept Reiniger on the field and Joe got a lot of passes his way to try an get a couple of goals, but he never got one. His next chance will come Saturday night against the Philadelphia KiXX at the Wachovia Spectrum at 6:05 pm (CDT). If he's unsuccessful Saturday night, Reiniger will have another chance at Savvis Center on Monday, Feb. 20th against the Baltimore Blast at 4:35 pm (CDT).
Steamers Bring International Flavor:
The St. Louis Steamers definitely bring an international flavor every time they take the field. The players that make up the current active roster are representatives from eight different nations. Members of the Steamers hail from the United States (13 players), Macedonia (1), Canada (1), Bosnia (1), Mexico (1), Argentina (1), Chile (1) and Cuba (1). That doesn't include the coaching staff. Assistant coach Emil Dragicevic also calls Bosnia home and Head Coach Omid Namazi, although born in the United States, lived in Iran for much of his childhood. In the Steamers' front office, President Zoran Savic is form Serbia, but he has lived much of his life in the U.S.
The Week Ahead:
The Steamers will try to stay on top of the MISL when they travel to Philadelphia this weekend, Saturday, Feb. 18th at 6:05. The Steamers are 1-0 in the Wachovia Spectrum and 2-0 overall against the KiXX. It took an overtime goal from D.J. Newsom to win the last time they were in Philly which was on Jan 7th. Then St. Louis travels home to host the Baltimore Blast on Monday, Feb. 20th. The Steamers will put their perfect home record (9-0) on the line when they face off. Baltimore is the only team to beat the Steamers twice this season; both losses came in 1st Mariner Arena in Baltimore. They have defeated the Blast both times inside Savvis (Dec. 16th, Jan 24th).
