St. Louis Steamers News Release

ST. LOUIS - For the second time this season, St. Louis Steamers defender D.J. Newsom has been awarded with the MISL Defender of the Week Award. This comes following a fine defensive effort in the 6-3 victory over the Milwaukee Wave Sunday night. Milwaukee was held to only six shots on goal, thanks to a total of seven blocks by the Steamers. While Newsom recorded one of those blocks, he was also a major part of slowing down the Wave attack and limiting the Milwaukee to only one goal in the second half.

Steamers goalkeeper, Brett Phillips, only faced six shots during the game and only had to make three saves. In total, the St. Louis defense blocked seven Wave shots and held the previous first place dwellers to only three goals. Newsom is the team leader in blocks with 20 after Sunday afternoon's game. He has also added three goals on the season including an overtime game-winner on Jan. 7th in Philadelphia against the KiXX.

This is the second time the MISL has awarded Newsom with this honor. The first took place on Jan. 16th following another strong defensive performance against the Milwaukee Wave. Newsom is a St. Louis native and attended Rosary High School where he was a First-Team All-State selection in 1996. After that, he moved on to Quincy (IL) University where he was a four year starter for their soccer team. In his senior season, he was named to the Second-Team All-Conference Team.
