Steamers Top Philadelphia, 5-2

The St. Louis Steamers increased their lead in the MISL standings when they defeated the Philadelphia Kixx 5-2 Saturday afternoon at Savvis Center. St. Louis now leads the Baltimore Blast by two and one-half games and the Milwaukee Wave by three games. The Steamers, Blast and Wave have all clinched a trip to the MISL Championship Series. Saturday's win improved the Steamers' record to 17-5, while the Kixx dropped to 6-16. The Steamers are now 11-0 at Savvis Center this season and are the only team in the MISL to remain undefeated at home.

St. Louis was first to light up the scoreboard when Sterling Wescott scored the lone tally of the first quarter off an assist from Joe Reniger at 7:46.

Philadelphia answered at 2:15 of the second quarter on an unassisted goal by Ptah Myers. Carlos "Chile" Farias scored an unassisted restart goal at 5:22 to give St. Louis a one goal lead (2-1) that would hold until the halftime break.

Officials sent Steamers defender D.J. Newsom to the penalty box on a boarding call at 8:30 of the third quarter and Philadelphia wasted no time utilizing the man advantage. Drew Kopp scored for the Kixx on a restart, assisted by Pat Morris, at 8:32 to tie the game, 2-2. St. Louis went up 3-2 when Shaun David fired a rocket into the back of the net, off an assist by Reiniger, at 11:47 of the third quarter.

The Steamers increase their lead to two (4-2) when Jeff DiMaria made a pass across the mouth of the goal to forward Mike Apple, who knocked it in at 8:24 of the fourth quarter. Philadelphia player/coach Don D'Ambra was sent to the penalty box at 11:00 of the final stanza on an obstruction call and Jamar Beasley found the back of the net 47 seconds later (11:47), assisted by Genoni Martinez, for a final score of 5-2.

Goalkeeper Brett Phillips earned the win in goal for the Steamers, improving his league-best record to 15-4. Peter Pappas took the loss in goal for the Kixx, dropping his record to 6-14. St. Louis outshot Philadelphia, 35-13. Phillips faced 10 shots and registered eight saves while Pappas faced 22 shots and made 17 saves. The penalties to Newsom and D'Ambra were the only two of the contest. A total of 30 fouls were called during the game, with 16 called on the Steamers and 14 on the Kixx.

The Steamers take to the road for back-to-back games next weekend. On Saturday, March 18, the Steamers visit the Kixx in Philadelphia for a 6:05 p.m. contest. The Chicago Storm hosts the Steamers the next day at 4:00 p.m. (Sunday, March 19). The Steamers then return home to Savvis Center to duel the Milwaukee Wave Saturday March 25 at 1:05 p.m.
