St. Louis Steamers News Release
ST. LOUIS - The St. Louis Steamers (16-5), having already secured a place in the Major Indoor Soccer League Championship Series, will take on the Philadelphia KiXX (6-15) Saturday afternoon at 1:05 p.m. at the Savvis Center. It is the first time the Steamers will have played a game at home since defeating the Baltimore Blast, 9-7 on February 20th. Their record at Savvis Center is a perfect 10-0 and the Steamers remain the only MISL team with a perfect home record. The last time the KiXX visited Savvis was an 8-4 win for the Steamers in their home opener on November 26th.
The Steamers clinched a spot in the MISL post-season last weekend when the KiXX were beaten by Baltimore, 5-2, on March 3rd. The KiXX loss ensured the Steamers would finish the regular season with one of the top four records in the MISL, thus enabling the post-season birth. The MISL Championship Series begins during the weekend of April 14-16 with semi-final rounds. Those teams and dates have yet to be determined, with the exception of the Steamers clinching a position.
So far this season, the Steamers have a perfect 3-0 record against Philadelphia with their last win coming at the Wachovia Spectrum in Philadelphia on Feb. 18th, a final of 8-6. In that game, defender Genoni Martinez scored four goals and added an assist. His performance earned him the MISL Defender of the Week announced on Feb. 20th. Brett Phillips was in goal for the Steamers that evening and took home his 13th win of the season by turning away eight of the 14 shots he faced.
The Steamers are looking to clinch home field advantage for the MISL Championship Series and currently hold a two game lead over the second place Baltimore Blast in the MISL standings. Following Saturday's game, the Steamers will prepare to take on the Philadelphia KiXX once again when they travel to Wachovia Spectrum for a match up on March 18th at 6:05 p.m. CDT.
