January 14, 2006 - Major Indoor Soccer League 2 (MISL 2)
St. Louis Steamers News Release

Although it was Friday the 13th, the St. Louis Steamers experienced plenty of good fortune. The second-place Steamers stunned the first-place Wave in a 10-4 blowout before 3,001 fans Friday night at U.S. Cellular Arena in Milwaukee. The Steamers improved their record to 9-3, while the Wave dropped to 9-2. St. Louis now trails Milwaukee by only one-half game in the MISL standings.

Sterling Wescott (2 goals, 1 assist) and Jamar Beasley (2 goals, 1 assist) led the St. Louis offense with three points each. Elvir Kafedzic, Carlos "Chile" Farias, Genoni Martinez, Mariano Bollella, D.J. Newsom and Sandre Naumoski also scored for St. Louis.

Todd Dusosky put Milwaukee on the board first when he scored off a pass from Greg Howes at 3:48 of the first quarter. The Steamers responded quickly and often, scoring the next goal just 20 seconds later then three more consecutive tallies to follow. Elvir Kafedzic scored unassisted at 4:28, and Jamar Beasley scored his 11th goal of the season with an assist by Wescott at 12:01 of the first quarter, which ended with St. Louis leading, 2-1.

Carlos "Chile" Farias was credited with a goal at 1:26 of the second period to increase the Steamers' lead to 3-1. Genoni Martinez put the Steamers up 4-1 with a power play goal, assisted by Farias at 4:18. With six seconds remaining in the quarter (14:54), Greg Howes scored a power play goal, assisted by Todd Dusosky, to send the teams to the halftime break with St. Louis leading 4-2.

Milwaukee defender Troy Dusosky reduced the Steamers' lead to 4-3 with a third quarter power play goal, assisted by Giuliano Oliviero, but the Steamers roared back with the next six goals. Mariano Bollella scored an unassisted goal at 3:06 and Sterling Wescott scored at 8:21, assisted by Randy Soderman. Newsom took a pass from Goalkeeper Brett Phillips and put it in net at 11:08 to give the Steamers a 7-3 lead going into the final stanza.

Beasley was credited with his 12th goal of the season and second of the game during a St. Louis power play at 1:19 of the fourth quarter to increase the Steamers' lead to 8-3. Wescott scored his second of the night, a power play goal, assisted by Beasley, at 7:40, to put St. Louis up 9-3. Sandre Naumsoki registered the tenth St. Louis goal of the night (unassisted) at 9:28 of the fourth. With Milwaukee defender Matt Schmidt playing sixth attacker, Hewerton Moreira (assisted by Todd Dusosky) scored for the Wave at 12:59, but it was too little, too late as the Steamers stunned the defending MISL Champions, 10-4.

St. Louis played without the services of head coach Omid Namazi, who is serving a suspension for an incident that occurred in Philadelphia in the fourth quarter of Saturday's (January 7) game. Veteran forward Joe Reiniger, who is resting an ailing knee, served as acting coach for the Steamers. Namazi's suspension was originally for six games, but following an appeal by the Steamers and a hearing by the league, the MISL announced late Friday that the suspension would be reduced to four games total. (Full story here.) Namazi will be eligible to return to the bench when the Steamers visit Baltimore on January 28.

Brett Phillips took the win in goal for the Steamers, improving his record to 8-2. The Steamers' defense was at it's best tonight, as evidenced by the fact that Phillips only faced only eight shots, making four saves. Nick Vorberg took the loss in goal for the Wave, dropping his record to 8-2. Vorberg faced 20 shots and registered 11 saves. In his role as sixth attacker for Milwaukee, Schmidt faced three shots and saved two.

Milwaukee and St. Louis were the top two penalty killing teams in the MISL coming into Friday's contest. They combined to allow five power play goals on six chances. The Steamers scored three times on four power play opportunities, while Milwaukee scored twice on four opportunities. The Steamers outshot Milwaukee 26-13 in Friday's match. Officials called 39 fouls in the contest, with 19 going to St. Louis and 20 to Milwaukee.
