Fayetteville SwampDogs News Release
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Fayetteville SwampDogs suffered their first setback of the season, falling 6-1 to the Edenton Steamers Thursday night at J.P. Riddle Stadium.
Things went the Dogs way in the first inning as starter Cam Knott worked around a two out double in the first from Steamer first baseman Ty Barkell.
The SwampDogs then went to work in the bottom of the first, with left fielder Jacob Long lacing a double to right field with one out. He moved to third on a groundout by right fielder Chase Edwards and scored on a ground rule double from Lane Paul.
The Steamers pushed across the equalizer in the third inning when Isaac Smith put on a baserunning display: singling, then stealing second and third before scoring when the throw to third trickled up the left field line.
The score would only remain tied for a short time as the bottom of the fourth proved fatal for the Dogs. A two-out rally plated five Steamer runs, and that was more than Starting pitcher Manny Arciniega would need.
He cruised through six innings allowing just three hits while walking three and striking out five.
The one bright spot in the game for the SwampDogs was the performance of their bullpen. Randy Hair, Justin White and Bennett Schiltz combined for five innings of scoreless relief work, combining to retire the final 13 Steamer batters.
That performance pushed the bullpen's scoreless innings streak to 12 to begin the season.
The winning pitcher in the game was Manny Arciniega, who improves to 1-0. Cam Knott suffered the loss, falling to 0-1. The SwampDogs are now 2-1, one game behind the Steamers in the Coastal Plain League East standings.
The Dogs will travel south to Columbia, S.C. to take on the Blowfish Friday night before returning to The Swamp Saturday to play the Blowfish in the second end of the home-and-home series. For tickets and more information, call the SwampDogs at 426-5900.
