St. Louis Steamers News Release

(St. Louis, March 31, 2004) -- During their late-season run to qualify for the MISL playoffs, the St. Louis Steamers have endured a series of obstacles – including recent injuries to their top two goal-scorers, Steve Butcher and Sipho Sibiya. However, a 4-0 first-half deficit to host Monterrey Wednesday proved to be too much as the Steamers (13-21) lost 6-3 and were officially eliminated from playoff contention.

St. Louis, which re-entered the MISL as an expansion team for the 2003-04 season, has two road games remaining to conclude the regular season: April 3 at Dallas, and April 5 at Monterrey.

Wednesday night before a crowd of 4,218 at Arena Monterrey, Genomi Martinez led the Fury (8-25) with three goals and an assist and Marco Coria added two goals and an assist. Jeff DiMaria paced the St. Louis offensive attack with two goals.

Oswaldo Medina gave Monterrey a 1-0 lead at six minutes, 41 seconds of the first quarter, and the Fury raced to a 4-0 lead on subsequent second-quarter goals by Coria (:14), Coria (6:34), and Martinez (7:36). DiMaria made it 4-1 on an unassisted goal at 7:50 of the second, and Sterling Wescott cut the deficit to 4-2 at 14:37 of the second on a feed from Daryl Doran.

DiMaria scored another unassisted goal just 23 seconds into the third quarter to make it 4-3. However, the Fury countered with a pair of goals by Martinez – at 4:24 of the third and at 12:52 of the fourth – for the 6-3 final.

The Steamers April 3 game against Dallas kicks off at 7:05 p.m. (CST) at Reunion Arena. St. Louis concludes its season April 5 in Monterrey with a 1:05 p.m. (CDT) kickoff at Arena Monterrey.
