Steamers defeated by KiXX, 7-3

(St. Louis, March 20, 2004) -- The Philadelphia KiXX defeated the St. Louis Steamers 7-3 Saturday night at the Wachovia Spectrum in Philadelphia. The Steamers (13-18) fell behind 3-0 after the first quarter and couldn't recover after playing their second game in two nights; the Steamers defeated MISL Central Division rival Kansas City 10-4 Friday night. With the Friday-night win, the Steamers claimed the season series -- 4-2 -- between the intrastate rivals.

Kevin Sloan had two goals and an assist to lead Philadelphia Saturday night. Player/Coach Daryl Doran had a goal and two assists to lead the Steamers. St. Louis and Philadelphia (19-13) split four games in the teams' 2003-04 MISL season series.

Philadelphia Player/Coach Don D'Ambra gave the KiXX a 1-0 lead when he scored off his own rebound at 3 minutes, 36 seconds of the first quarter. Just seven seconds later, KiXX midfielder Ze Roberto stripped the ball from Steamers goalkeeper Brett Phillips and scored to make it 2-0. Philadelphia's Kevin Sloan scored at 9:11 of the first to give the KiXX a 3-0 lead. Nando Hernandez took over the goalkeeping duties for St. Louis after one quarter. In the second, Philadelphia's David Placido (3:28) and Kevin Sloan (11:27) scored to make it 5-0. Jake Bleyenberg put St. Louis on the board at 14:46 of the second on an assist from Doran to make it 5-1.

KiXX forward Byron Carmichael made it 6-1 at 3:54 of the third. Tati Errecalde scored for the Steamers at 11:57 of the third to make it 6-2; the goal was the fourth in three games for Errecalde since signing with the Steamers March 11. Philadelphia took a 7-2 lead at 1:17 of the fourth on a goal by Tony McPeak. Doran completed the scoring at 3:52 of the fourth on an assist from Hernandez for the 7-3 final.

The Steamers play their final home game of the season March 27 at 1:05 p.m. against MISL Central Division leader Milwaukee at The Family Arena. The event is "Fan Appreciation Game." All fans with a paid admission for the March 27 game can redeem their ticket stub -- prior to Dec. 31, 2004 -- for a free admission to a Steamers home game next season. Another special attraction at halftime of the March 27 game is the "BackStoppers Shots at Slobo" event. For $5, fans have the opportunity to take a shot at Steamers legend Slobo Ilijevski. All money raised will be donated to the BackStoppers, which helps serve the families of fallen police officers and firefighters in the St. Louis region. After the March 27 game, the Steamers play their final four games on the road.
