St. Louis Steamers News Release
ST. LOUIS - The St. Louis Steamers (22-7) flexed their home muscles once again in their 8-4 win over the Milwaukee Wave (17-12). The Steamers improved their record at Savvis Center to 13-1 on the season. Collinsville, IL native Joe Reiniger scored a power play goal set up from defender Genoni Martinez for his 600th career professional indoor goal at the 3:00 mark of the second quarter.
It was also a special night also due to the fact that the Steamers retired Daryl Doran's number 7 jersey to the rafters of the Savvis. Doran, a St. Louis native, played 20 of his 21 seasons in St. Louis as a member of the Steamers, Storm and Ambush. He also served as player/coach from the 1994-95 season through last season. He retired from the game following last season as has served as Vice President of Corporate Sales and Alumni Association in the Steamers front office. Several of Doran's former players, coaches and friends and family joined him on the field while his jersey was raised during a special halftime presentation.
In the game, the Steamers took the lead early on and never trailed. Carlos Farias opened the scoring with an unassisted goal. After the Wave tied it up, Reiniger scored his historic goal from the point after taking a feed from Martinez. Off of his left foot, Reiniger slammed it past Wave keeper Nick Vorberg giving the Steamers a 2-1 lead. Before the half, Jamar Beasley got in on the scoring after being set up from Reiniger making it 3-1 at the break.
The second half saw Mariano Bollella get a power play goal from Beasley. After Milwaukee made it one goal closer, the Steamers countered with three straight goals from Mike Apple, Shaun David and Elvir Kafedzic. While the Wave made it interesting in the fourth quarter by scoring two late goals, Shaun David closed out the game with a goal of his own and making the final, 8-4.
The Steamers close out their regular season next Saturday night when they take on the Chicago Storm at Savvis beginning at 7:05 p.m. St. Louis has already clinched the regular season title and the number one seed in the MISL Championship Series, ensuring home-field advantage throughout.
