March 3, 2006 - Major Indoor Soccer League 2 (MISL 2)
St. Louis Steamers News Release
The first place Steamers (16-5) lost an 8-5 duel to the California Cougars (5-18) Friday night at the Stockton Arena. Prior to the game, the Baltimore Blast defeated the Philadelphia Kixx, thus eliminating any chance of Philadelphia catching the Steamers in the standings and locking a playoff berth for the Steamers. Friday's game was the sixth and final meeting between the Steamers and Cougars. St. Louis holds a 5-1 lead over the Cougars on the season. The Steamers now lead Baltimore by a game and a half and lead the Milwaukee Wave by two games.
Neither team scored in the opening stanza. California got the first two tallies of the game in the second quarter on goals by Vicente Figueroa and former Steamer Craig Scheer. The Steamers tied the game on goals by Jamar Beasley and Sandre Naumoski to send the teams into the halftime break knotted 2-2.
The Cougars went up 3-2 when Ronnie Ekelund scored a restart goal off a pass from John Ball. California went up by two (4-2) on a goal by former Steamer Aaron Susi. The Steamers reduced the deficit by one (4-3) when Beasley scored on a power play off a pass from Mariano Bollella. St. Louis drew even (4-4) when Joe Reiniger scored his 599th career goal. Bernie Lilavois answered for California and the Cougars held a 5-4 lead at the end of the third quarter.
California went up by two (6-4) on a goal by John Ball. Carlos "Chile" Farias closed the gap to 6-5 with a goal for St. Louis. Brian Farber put California up by two (7-5). With the sixth attacker in play for the Steamers, California scored an open net goal to seal the 8-5 victory.
The Steamers are back in action at Savvis Center next Saturday, March 11 when they host the Philadelphia Kixx in a 1:05 afternoon affair. Tickets for all Steamers home games are available at Ticketmaster.com, the Savvis Center Box Office, all Ticketmaster Outlets including the Blue Note Shops, Famous-Barr, The Ice Zone, and select Schnucks stores and via charge-by-phone at 314-241-1888.
