St. Louis Steamers News Release
ST. LOUIS - Sunday night, the St. Louis Steamers defeated the visiting California Cougars, 5-1 in a hard fought physical game in Savvis Center. It was just Saturday night that the Steamers suffered a 12-7 loss to the Blast in Baltimore, knocking St. Louis out of first place. The first quarter started off slowly with the first goal coming at the 12:42 mark off of the foot of Joe Reiniger. It was Reiniger's fourth goal since returning from the IR with an injured knee. It stayed that way all the way until the end of the quarter. Steamers goalkeeper Bayard Elfvin was given the start in goal to give Brett Phillips the night off. Elfvin made five saves in the quarter.
In the second quarter, Steamers forward Mariano Bollella scored his first goal on the power play to make it 2-0. St. Louis dominated the quarter out shooting the Cougars, 9-5. Jamar Beasley assisted on the goal, tipping the ball back to Bollella. At halftime, it was 2-0.
The second half saw much more physical action. Early in the half, Elfvin was kneed in the head on a break where he stopped a shot. The accidental conduct led to Elfvin being removed from the game, and Brett Phillips taking over in net. Then defender Randy Soderman scored his tenth goal of the season to make it 3-0. Towards the end of the quarter, some pushing and shoving led to two yellow cards given to Jeff DiMaria and Mariano Bollella, both for unsportsmanlike conduct. Just 25 seconds later saw a fight and punches thrown. Soderman and the Cougars' Gary Brooks each received red cards for violent conduct and were ejected from the game.
Chile Farias stayed hot and scored a goal early in the fourth to push the score to 4-0. Shortly after that, Bollella cored his second goal to make it 5-0. The only question now was if Elfvin and Phillips would combine for a shut out. But Vicente Figueroa spoiled any thoughts of that and scored halfway through the fourth quarter making the score 5-1. It would end up being the final as the Steamers stayed tight on defense and finished up the win. It makes the Steamers a perfect 7-0 at home. They are the only team remaining in the MISL with a perfect home record.
